A young Tokyo-based company called Sanrio asked designer Ikuko Shimizu to invent a cartoon animal who would appeal to the preteen girl in everyone. The company needed the new critter to decorate a plastic coin purse it was planning to produce and they decided Hello Kitty was the perfect character.

Hello Kitty had a huge range of products aimed at all ages. From Hello Kitty costume, dolls, clothes and party supplies to appliances, guitars and even a hello kitty jet plane. But that’s not all, there are 2 hello kitty themed theme parks, multiple video games and even a music c.d.

In a word a Hello Kitty costume is cute. Or more accurately, kawaii, the distinctively Japanese breed of cuteness that injects adorable attributes into all aspects of the country’s consumer culture. This may be why Hello Kitty had become loved by so many children and adults all over the world.
